Welcome to our "Five-Minute Interview" series, which explores what drives successful leaders in the life sciences industry—from personal and professional habits to hobbies, reading lists, and even their not-so-secret guilty pleasures.

In the industry, Mike Rea is perhaps best known as a thought leader in innovation. Specifically, IDEA Pharma, where Rea serves as CEO, is renowned for its annual "Innovation and Invention Index," which measures how major pharmaceutical companies bring their pipelines to market and realize their value.

With expertise in launch pathway strategy, IDEA Pharma originally created the index about 12 years ago to gain more insights for its consulting business. Since then, the index has taken on a life of its own in the public sphere, attracting media attention each year and offering a window into the effectiveness of business strategies within large pharma companies.

But Rea's achievements extend far beyond pharma. He owns an independent music label called Medical Records Limited, fosters dogs for charity, and played a key role in bringing American football to UK universities.

Here's more of Rea's story, both at work and beyond.

Editor's note: For more insights from Rea on leading innovative pharma companies, join the virtual event co-hosted by PharmaVoice and BioPharma Dive, "The Next Frontier of Life Sciences. On October 25 at 1 p.m. ET, Rea will deliver a keynote on innovation, followed by a panel discussion with industry executives on how companies can ensure the future readiness of their pipelines.

Career Highlights

What professional achievement are you most proud of?

Although I've been named to various "best of pharma" lists over the years, my true highlight is seeing the work we've been involved in succeed on its own merits. For example, we provided positioning services for five of the top ten best-selling brands in 2028 and contributed to the strategy for 19 of the top 30 drug launches between 2015 and 2022.

Misconceptions About Innovation

What is one thing about innovation in pharma that is often misunderstood?

For good reason, we distinguish invention from innovation—innovation is about creating value from invention. Based on that, it's obvious that the commercial side must be involved in the development process. Yet many pharma companies often don't bring in the commercial perspective until late in development (sometimes as late as five years in), beyond basic forecasting, which is clearly far too late.

Keeping Your Company Innovative

You specialize in understanding industry innovation—how do you keep your own company innovative?

We see ourselves as a "pirate ship," but we have a clear understanding of that concept: flat structure, democratic decision-making, encouraging ideas from everywhere, pursuing mastery, and so on. As a result, employees are encouraged to propose and lead their own ideas, and the company supports them.

The Unexpected Side

What is something about you that would surprise people?

The only thing I'm mentioned for on Wikipedia isfounding the British Universities American Football League, which later established ties with the National Football League (NFL). I founded the first university American football team in the UK and thoroughly enjoyed playing the game.

Leadership Reflections

What is the biggest leadership mistake you've made?

Probably a slowly compounding one—taking too long to build the right leadership team to transition IDEA from a founder-led company into a world-class enterprise.

Music Collection and Label

You own a record label and have a large music collection. What are some of your most treasured records?

I just made a list of ten records I must play on my turntable—some records need to be listened to in full, like hearing the end of side A. Over the years I've bought around two thousand albums, but that's nothing compared to Spotify or Apple Music, though the listening experience there is completely different. Through my own label, I've had the privilege of releasing music by bands I love, such as The Can't Tells, Bear Ceuse, or Don Babylon.

Innovation Most Needed in the Industry

What kind of innovation or breakthrough does pharma need most right now?

We believe that most of the truly core work in pharma happens before Phase II—that's when the concept of the drug's eventual launch truly takes shape. Yet this stage is often seen merely as establishing the drug's safety signal. In reality, it's the stage where innovators can have the greatest impact.

Charity Dog Fostering

What type of dogs do you foster for charity? Do you have any currently?

I foster poodle mixes for the Doodle Trust—I currently have two foster dogs with me right now (right at my feet), plus I have four of my own, one of which was originally a foster that I adopted.

Guilty Pleasures

What is your "guilty pleasure"?

Probably endlessly rewatching the American version of The Office, or the fact that I'd always rather be with my main dog companion, Doug, than wherever I currently am.
